Why is Baidu Pan so slow? The speed limit, measured
It's not your internet and it's not the distance to China. Baidu deliberately caps free accounts to a total bandwidth so low that a 1GB file takes an afternoon. We measured exactly how low — and how much a premium account changes it.

The numbers
Same 1GB file, same server, same day. Only the account tier and the number of parallel connections change:
| Account | Connections | Speed | 1GB takes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 1 | 53 KB/s | ~5 hours |
| Free | 16 | 71 KB/s | ~4 hours |
| SVIP | 8 | 8.7 MB/s | ~2 min |
| SVIP | 16 | 15.8 MB/s | ~1 min |
| SVIP | 32 | 19.0 MB/s | ~53 s |
What the numbers say
- Free is throttled per account, not per connection. 16× more connections gave only +34%. Multi-threaded downloaders can't help — the cap is on your total.
- SVIP removes the cap — a 360× jump. From 53 KB/s to 19 MB/s. Beyond 16 connections the gain flattens (+20% from 16 to 32), which means we hit the network line, not Baidu.
- Server location barely matters. The bottleneck is the account tier. A server next door to Beijing on a free account is still 50 KB/s.
Why Baidu does this
Baidu Pan's business model is the SVIP subscription. The free tier exists to hold files and get others to sign up; the throttle is the upsell. It's deliberate and it's not going away.
So what do you do?
- Pay Baidu for SVIP yourself — if you can register and pay (mainland phone number and payment methods make this hard from abroad), and you have enough links to justify a monthly fee.
- Use a service that already has SVIP. BaiduFast downloads through its own SVIP account at the 19 MB/s above and gives you a direct link. Small links are free, bigger ones are pay-per-link — no subscription for a single file.
