Android TV box and tablet firmware on Baidu Pan: finding the right file, flashing it, and getting it without a Chinese account
A no-name Android TV box stuck on the boot logo, a Chinese tablet that lost Google services after an update, a set-top box whose remote app disappeared: the fix is almost always "flash the stock firmware", and the stock firmware is almost always a pan.baidu.com/s/… link in a forum post from 2021 with a four-character code under it. This guide is about that link: how to tell whether it is even the right file, where else the same file may live, which tool flashes it, and how to download it when Baidu is the only copy and you have no Chinese account.
First: identify the board, not the brand name
The sticker on the box is a marketing name; the firmware has to match the board. Open Settings → About, or for a dead box, open the case. You are looking for three things:
- Chip: Amlogic (S905X, S905W, S912, S905X3, S905X4), Allwinner (H3, H6, H313, H616), Rockchip (RK3228, RK3318, RK3328) or MediaTek (MT8163, MT8167, MT8788 on tablets). It is printed on the SoC itself.
- Board ID: a string like
p212,p281,q7,x96_max_plus_q2in the firmware file name, or silk-screened on the PCB next to the SoC. - RAM/eMMC size and Wi-Fi module: 1/8, 2/16, 4/32, and the Wi-Fi chip (RTL8189, SSV6051, AP6330). A firmware for the 2/16 variant on a 1/8 board boots to a black screen.
A firmware named S905W_p281_2G16G_RTL8189_2021-03.img is for exactly that combination and nothing else. If the Baidu link's file name does not spell this out, the forum post or the uploader's comment usually does.
Where else the file may already be
Before chasing a Baidu link, spend ten minutes here:
- The vendor's own download page, if the box has a real vendor (Ugoos, Beelink, Tanix, Mecool, X96 via their resellers). Those are direct downloads.
- 4PDA (Russian) and XDA threads for the board ID, not the brand. 4PDA in particular mirrors a lot of Chinese firmware on Mega or Google Drive.
- Telegram firmware channels for Amlogic and Allwinner boxes, searchable by board ID.
- The Chinese source forum itself: 恩山 (right.com.cn) for routers and boxes, 数码之家 (mydigit.cn) for tablets and boxes. The posts are Chinese, the link is Baidu, but the comments often contain a re-upload to Quark or 123pan, which are easier to deal with.
If all of those come up empty, the Baidu link is the only copy, which is common for firmware older than two or three years.
Matching the file to the flashing tool
The file extension tells you the tool, and the tool tells you whether you even need the full image:
| Chip | File you get | Tool | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amlogic | .img (1–2 GB) |
USB Burning Tool (Windows) or a bootable SD card made with Burn Card Maker | Needs a male-to-male USB A cable for the USB route |
| Allwinner | .img (PhoenixSuit format) |
PhoenixSuit / PhoenixCard | Tablet must enter FEL mode (hold a button or short two pads) |
| Rockchip | update.img or .zip |
RKDevTool / AndroidTool, or SD update | Also see the Rockchip SDK post for developer BSPs |
| MediaTek | folder with scatter.txt, boot.img, system.img |
SP Flash Tool | Firmware is usually a 1–3 GB zip of the whole folder |
Two things catch people out. A Baidu share often contains the firmware and the tool and the driver in one folder, so a "1.4 GB firmware" is really 900 MB of image plus tools; you want the whole folder. And a lot of Amlogic firmware on Baidu is an OTA .zip rather than a burn image: it needs a working recovery, it will not revive a bricked box.
Getting the Baidu file without a Chinese account
Baidu Pan asks for a Chinese phone number to register, throttles free accounts to a crawl, and the web page tries to push you into its client. For a one-off firmware this is not worth setting up.
Paste the pan.baidu.com link (and the code, if the post gives one) on the BaiduFast home page. In a few seconds you see the real size and every file in the share, including the tools and drivers in the folder, and the price before anything is downloaded. Small files are free; a typical 1–2 GB firmware folder costs about the price of a coffee. Confirm, and you get a direct download link on the same page, with the folder as one ZIP. The same box takes Quark, 123pan, Xunlei and UC Drive links, which is where the re-uploads from the comments usually point.
Before you flash
- Check the MD5 if the post gives one. Baidu shares of old firmware are sometimes re-uploads of re-uploads.
- Back up what you can: on a working box,
adb pullthe/system/build.propat least, it tells you the exact build you are replacing. - Flash the full image once, not an OTA, if the box is bricked.
- Keep the firmware file. The Baidu link will die one day; yours will not.
Questions
The link says 分享已失效 (share expired). The uploader deleted it or Baidu removed it. Nobody can fetch it, with or without an account. Search the board ID again; firmware tends to be re-shared.
The Baidu folder has ten firmware versions. Which one? Take the newest one whose name matches your board ID, RAM/flash and Wi-Fi chip exactly. Newer is not better if it is for a different variant.
Is a Quark or 123pan link better than Baidu? For getting the file, they are all the same wall from outside China. Quark pages at least show the file list without logging in, so you can confirm the file name before paying anyone.
Paste the link on the home page — you see the exact size first. Free under 150MB, no account, direct or Google Drive link.
